Becoming a Foster Parent? Changes to Make in Your Home to Keep Everyone Safe

Posted on: 25 October 2016

If you are becoming a foster parent soon, you need to make sure your home is completely safe for the children. Below are two things you can do to help you get started. You can then rest easy knowing your family is safe.

Fire Safety

According to the National Fire Academy, there are approximately 1,800 residential fires reported to the fire departments in the United States, and, out of these fires, approximately 2,635 people died. To keep you and your family from becoming one of these statistics, there are many things you can do.

One thing you should consider is to install a fire sprinkler system in your home.  Even one fire sprinkler can put out a fire in a kitchen. Installing several sprinklers can help you and your family get out of your home safely if there is a fire.

There are multipurpose fire sprinkler systems which are integrated with the cold-water plumbing in your home.  This type of sprinkler system was designed specifically for a residential home. Standalone residential sprinkler systems are also available. This type of system does not use the plumbing pipes in your home but instead is installed as an additional system that is kept away from your home's water supply using a backflow preventer.

It is much more cost effective to choose a sprinkler system that integrates with your current plumbing as you would not have to install additional pipes. Talk to a company like Nor Cal Fire Protection for information about what kind of sprinkler system would work in your home.

Home Security System

If you do not currently have a security system installed in your home, now is the perfect time to do so. A home security company can install an alarm for all entrances into your home to prevent intruders from coming in. The security company can also install sensors on doors and windows so you can be alerted when they are open, such as if one of the children tries to get out of a window or door.

You have the choice to install a monitored security system which is where the system is tied into the security company. If an alarm goes off, they will immediately notify the proper authorities.

You can purchase a system that is not monitored. This type of system sets off an alarm inside your home that is loud enough for everyone to hear if someone tries to break into your home. The system can also have flashing lights along with the alarm.

Contact a security company in your area to learn much more information about security systems.
